Serpentine is an incredible crystal, commonly seen as a greenish-yellowish color. Serpentine is an ideal stone for those who are regularly exposed to electromagnetic smog and/or energetic pollution. Serpentine is also a great stone for those who meditate, as it is both grounding and elevating. Serpentine cleanses and aligns the entire Chakra field, while opening up psychic channels. Serpentine is also one of the best stones for exploring Kundalini energy and creating pathways for that energy.
History
Serpentine was prevalent in ancient civilizations in Ancient Egypt, Persia, and Assyria. The Serpentine stone was revered for its luster and was used to make jewelry, household items and decorations, as well as gifts for deities. Serpentine was often worn by members of these ancient civilizations as protection against poisons and evil spirits. Serpentine was most commonly used for household ornaments due to its beautiful appearance and how easy it is to carve with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 6.
Composition and Formation
Serpentine is derived from minerals that are created through a process fittingly named serpentinization. Serpentinization is a metamorphic process that combines heat and water at low temperatures to oxidize ultramafic rocks (igneous rocks composed mainly of mafic minerals) to create the fibrous scale-like patterns within the stone.
Serpentine refers to a group of minerals composed of hydrated magnesium silicate that contain small amounts of nickel, cobalt, manganese, and chromium. These trace elements produce a Serpentine stone occurring in a variety of colors including gree, brown, yellow, and white.
