Amber

Introduction

Amber, a gemstone unlike any other, has captivated the hearts and minds of humanity for centuries. It is not your typical precious stone; it holds within its golden hues the secrets of ages gone by. When you hold a piece of Amber, you can't help but feel its warmth and vitality, as though it carries the very essence of the sun itself. With its rich, honey-like colors ranging from pale yellows to deep oranges, Amber exudes a sense of warmth and radiance that is truly enchanting.

History and Characteristics

Amber is a gift from nature. It is the fossilized resin of ancient trees. Amber is believed to have many spiritual, emotional, and healing properties that can improve health and wellbeing. It is an ancient knowledge and remedy. Amber has a rich history dating back thousands of years. It has been highly valued for its beauty and healing properties by various ancient civilizations. The ancient Greeks referred to amber as “elektron,” meaning “formed by the sun,” due to its ability to generate static electricity when rubbed. In ancient Rome, amber was considered a symbol of wealth and status. It has been used in jewelry, amulets, and religious artifacts throughout history. Amber has also been used in traditional medicine for its healing properties. Today, it continues to be cherished for its beauty and metaphysical properties.

Amber is found in various parts of the world, and its origin can be traced back to different geological formations. The majority of the world's commercially significant Amber comes from the Baltic region, particularly from countries such as Russia, Lithuania, Poland, and Latvia. Baltic Amber is highly prized for its quality and is often referred to as "Baltic Gold."

Apart from the Baltic region, Amber is also found in other parts of Europe, including the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Romania, Italy, and Ukraine. Each location produces Amber with unique characteristics, such as variations in color, transparency, and inclusions.

In addition to Europe and the Americas, Amber deposits can be found in countries like China, Myanmar (Burma), Japan, Indonesia, and Australia. These deposits contribute to the global diversity of Amber and offer distinct varieties.

It's fascinating to think about how Amber travelled through time, with the resin being released by ancient trees and then fossilizing over millions of years. Today, it is unearthed from the depths of the Earth, allowing us to marvel at its beauty and connect with a world long past.

Unlike other gemstones that are formed in water or fire, amber is formed in the resin of trees. Resin works like a plaster for trees’ wounds. When a tree becomes injured, resin oozes out of the exposed area to fill the gap. As the resin is exposed to the air and sunlight, it begins to harden. This forms a protective layer that protects the tree from fungi, infection, and some deadly diseases. The deeper the resin gets buried over many millennia, the more pressure and heat the resin will end up feeling. Over an extended period, these conditions cause the resin’s compounds to polymerize, or chemically react with each other to form a thicket of molecular linkages. This process yields the hard, glassy material that we know as amber.

Using Amber

If you’re ready to incorporate amber into your self-care or spiritual routine, there are simple and effective ways to begin:

  • Wear it daily: Amber jewelry allows the stone to remain close to your energy field throughout the day. Necklaces and bracelets are particularly effective!

  • Hold it during meditation: Use raw or polished amber as a palm stone to enhance focus and grounding.

  • Place it in your space: Amber near your bed or desk can create a more calming environment. Some even place it under pillows to promote deep sleep.

  • Use during journaling or affirmations: Amber can be a supportive companion in self-reflection rituals or goal-setting sessions.

Meditation With Amber

Amber is used in meditation when the desire is to connect to the earth wisdom of an earlier age. Its ancient energy is released as it is touched or held in the hand during a session. It can be used to purify an area for meditation, or to clear the mind, body and spirit in readiness for expanding the consciousness. Amber is a superb tool for past-life exploration, clearing family patterns, or cleansing karmic debris from one’s energy field. It is a powerful protector in shamanic journeys and for its ability to facilitate travel to the lower world. Focusing on the fossil in bright sunlight or by candlelight heightens one’s awareness.

Chakra

The gold and orange shades of Amber stimulate the Navel or Sacral Chakra, located below the naval and above the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis. It controls the flow of energy and is the center of gravity of the body. It is the center of the Life Force of the body, and controls the flow of information from the body to the mind and from the mind to the body. Gut feelings, intuition, and other "non-linear" communication comes from this chakra. When it is out of balance the symptoms manifest themselves as confusion, over dependency on others, repression of feelings, inability to feel joy, fear of sensuality or sex, and frustration. Gold or orange crystals are used to unblock the energy flow and restore one’s sense of balance, understanding and appreciation of life. When the Sacral Chakra is in balance one has grace, feels pleasure in life, and experiences the flexibility to "go with the flow" and do so in good spirit.

The yellow hues within Amber activate the Solar Plexus Chakra, the energy distribution center and the chakra of relationships. This chakra is located between the ribcage and navel, and controls the immune and digestive systems. When physically balanced, it provides the strength to fight infections, frees one of allergic reactions, and utilizes nutrients ingested. If the Solar Plexus is spiritually imbalanced, one may feel fear - of the disappointment or displeasure of others, or to subordinating one’s life and pleasures to the will of others. Yellow crystals spiritually balance the Solar Plexus, freeing one to interpret the world through one’s own thoughts and emotions and not live in fear of violating the dictums of others.

Other Colors of Amber and Chakra Associations:

  • Golden / Honey Amber: Resonates with the Solar Plexus Chakra (yellow energy center) — linked to self-confidence, personal power, and motivation.

  • Deep Orange / Cognac Amber: Associated with the Sacral Chakra — tied to creativity, emotions, sensuality, and emotional healing.

  • Light Yellow / Clear Amber: Often used for mental clarity and cleansing, still primarily affects the Solar Plexus but with gentler, more uplifting energy.

  • Green Amber: Rare but associated with the Heart Chakra, promoting emotional balance and love.

  • Red Amber / Cherry Amber: Connects to the Root Chakra, supporting grounding, security, and physical energy.

  • Blue Amber: (extremely rare, often from the Dominican Republic): Tied to the Throat Chakra, aiding in communication and expression.

Care And Cleansing of Amber

Cleansing Amber helps clear all the negative energy that's been absorbed. Here are a few methods you can use to cleanse Amber:

  • Sunlight: Amber is associated with the energy of the sun, so placing it in direct sunlight for a few hours can be an effective cleansing method. Find a sunny spot, such as a windowsill or outdoor area, and leave your Amber there. Be cautious not to expose it to excessive heat, as it may cause damage.

  • Moonlight: Another popular method is to cleanse Amber under the light of the moon. Full moon nights are particularly potent for this purpose. Place your Amber outside or near a window where it can receive the moon's gentle light for several hours or overnight.

  • Earth: Amber has a strong connection to the Earth, so burying it in natural soil or placing it on a bed of sea salt can help cleanse its energy. Leave the Amber buried or on the salt for several hours or overnight, then gently brush off any remaining debris.

  • Sound and vibration: Some people use sound or vibration to cleanse their Amber. You can place the stone near a singing bowl, bell, or tuning fork and create a resonating sound to help clear its energy. Alternatively, you can also use sound-clearing techniques like chanting or using a sound cleansing instrument like a Tibetan singing bowl.

  • Intent and visualization: Cleansing Amber can also be done through focused intention and visualization. Hold the stone in your hands, close your eyes, and imagine a pure, cleansing light surrounding it. Visualize any negative energy being released and replaced with positive, vibrant energy.

Remember, Trust your intuition and choose the method that resonates with you and your Amber the most.
