Dark night of the soul can look and feel like a few different things. The basic understanding is that when we go through spiritual awakenings it can take a toll on your physical, mental, and spiritual body. Awakening can show you that the life you were living turns out to be an illusion; or who you thought you were is a lie.
Dark night of the soul is a term used to describe what one could call a collapse of a perceived meaning in life. Nothing makes sense anymore, there’s no purpose to anything. So that leaves you in a dark place.
Really what has collapsed is the whole conceptual framework for your life, the meaning that your mind had given it. Which was not in alignment with your soul, and that belief needed to be shattered for your souls true life purpose to arise.
Now that you see a higher truth of reality, you can not unsee it. Your meaning for life needs to be reevaluated with this new found awareness. To emerge out of the dark night into a transformed state of consciousness.
It can feel like the universe is working against you, but hold faith everything is for your greater good. It also feels like a lonely process and it takes a lot of strength to get through it. With that being said, dark night is essential to truly awakening. Seeing, feeling, and experiencing what we’ve been shifting out of, and when you feel at your lowest you will slowly start opening your eyes to the world we’re meant to see. You’ll start feeling passion and excitement about what your mission here on Earth is.
If I could give you one piece of advice when it comes to dark night of the soul, it would be to let go of all control. The more you accept change, the faster you’ll get through to the other side. Resisting your new reality, your new self and your new energy is what causes suffering.

The idea and concept behind dark night of the soul comes from a poem by Saint John of the Cross, a 16th century Spanish mystic and poet. The idea of a spiritual depression, however, stems from many different spiritual and religious traditions, like Buddhism, where it’s refereed to as “falling into the pit of the void” It is most commonly used within certain Christian traditions to refer to an individual's spiritual crisis in the course of their union with God.
