Rose quartz has an abundance of lore, first found in 7000 B.C in Mesopotamia. Rose quartz was used in jewelry crafted by the Assyrians around 800-600 B.C. Rose quartz beads were of high value to the ancient Egyptians as talismans for their power to prevent aging. In the Middle Ages, medical practitioners used quartz in their healing potions. Knowing this stone as the “love stone”, it was known to balance emotions and heal anger.

A separate story comes from Greek Mythology, where Aphrodite was cut by a thorn bush trying to save Adonis from an attack. Causing them both to bleed onto white quartz, therefor creating a pink quartz stone. It later became customary for the Romans to use the stone as a gift of love and ownership.

Composition and Formation

Rose quartz as we know is a form of Quartz, quartz is formed by magma cooling when it reaches the surface. The magma then mixes with silicon and oxygen, creating quartz. During this cooling process, if titanium is present, it will also combine with the silicon and oxygen that's forming the quartz crystals. This creates an impurity in the quartz that causes a rose-colored appearance, creating rose quartz.
