Calcite, like many general mineral classes, come in various shades and forms. From the most vibrant colors to very mundane looking stones that get undervalued, they all have their own healing properties and are unique in their own ways. Calcites are most known for their ability to clear out blockages, activate different chakras, and work within the body, mind, and spirit.
History of General Calcite
An early discovery of calcite was at Eskifjord, Iceland in basalt where a single crystal 7x7x2 meters weighing 250 tons was reported. Transparent, colorless optical quality calcite is often referred to as “Iceland spar”. The mineral name “calcite” is credited to Gaius Plinius Secundus in the year 79 based on the Latin word for “lime”. Most of calcites history deals in the discovery of other minerals containing calcite, because of its composition it is found in hundreds of different stones, growing around and in other minerals.
Fun fact, these stones have been being used as early as the end of the 1500’s. One of the stone’s specimens was found on a viking ship dating back from 1592. The mineral was used as a compass depolarizing sunlight!
Composition and Formation of General Calcite
Limestone and marble are comprised primarily of CaCO3 (calcium carbonate) as are the shells of most marine organisms. Water often contains much dissolved calcium that can react with carbon dioxide to precipitate calcite.
The chemical and physical characteristics of calcite make it relatively easy to distinguish from other minerals. It is relatively soft and can be easily scratched with a knife, having a Mohs hardness of 3. For comparison, quartz has relative hardness of 7.
BLUE CALCITE:
Blue calcite is mainly composed of calcium carbonate with some manganese and carbon content. This blue and delicate stone has a density ranging from 2.6 to 2.8 and a hardness level of 3. It is generally found as a pebble of 5 to 7 cm in diameter, weighing between 100 and 150 g.
Where does Blue Calcite Come From?
Mexico: Known for producing high-quality blue calcite crystals.
United States: Significant deposits in states such as New Jersey, Tennessee, and Missouri.

ORANGE CALCITE:

Where is Orange Calcite Found?
China
India
Namibia
United States
History
Orange Calcite was “discovered” relatively recently by the metaphysical community and so it was not included in any early lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. Calcite is an extremely common and soft mineral which makes it an excellent choice for carving, both in ancient times and today. It is certainly possible that many of the carvings had healing and spiritual purposes.
The variety name “orange calcite” refers to its amber, honey-yellow, orange, and orange-red colors. Orange calcite is also known as “orange onyx,” “orange Mexican onyx,” “citrus calcite,” and “orange alabaster.”
Various ancient cultures, notably the Olmec that flourished between 1500 and 600 B.C. in southern and central Mexico, carved ceremonial cups and figurines from both the orange and red varieties of massive calcite. Anthropologists suggest that massive, orange massive calcite was the Olmec symbol for the sun. Much later, European medieval physicians prescribed potions of powdered orange calcite as a remedy for ailments of the eyes. Modern metaphysical practitioners value orange calcite as an “enhancement stone” that restores mental and emotional equilibrium, relieves emotional fears, brings insight into the causes of apathy or lethargy, facilitates the release of past traumas, and increases memory and learning abilities.
