Fire Agate

Fire Agate, known as the spiritual flame of absolute perfection, carries a great mystery locked inside its deep brown crystal. You need only touch the stone and fiery embers ignite. Peer into its depths and flames leap within its chambers. Study it closely and it will almost show you its secrets. Almost. Fire Agate is a variety of Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. It has a translucent deep reddish-brown base, with flashes of orange, red, green and gold that appears as living flames within the gem. Its iridescent colors are caused by light interference on thin layers of iron oxide or limonite crystals within the Chalcedony. Historically, Fire Agate was used in alchemy because it was believed to contain the essence of fire. In many traditions sacred to fire deities, it encouraged timid adults and shy children to speak up and not be ignored or bullied. It is a stone of integrity, encouraging high standards of behavior in self and others, and promotes passion in love and in life.

Metaphysically, Agate has a lower intensity and vibrates to a slower frequency than other stones, but is highly regarded as a stabilizing and strengthening influence. Fire Agate provides a steady, vibrant energy that stimulates a zest for living. It awakens the lower chakras and lights one’s inner fires of Life  Force, creativity, sexuality and will. It brings back to focus the Divine blueprint of one’s life purpose and increases the pleasures in everyday life.

Fire agate displays a unique play of color and iridescence, making it a highly sought-after gemstone among collectors and enthusiasts. It is a semi-precious natural gemstone discovered only in certain areas of central and northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. Fire Agate is formed by volcanic activity and is similar in appearance to quartz, but displays interesting swirls, bubbles, and patterns. Its name is derived from the fiery colors it exhibits. Fire Agate helps manifest Divine guidance through action, and assists one in taking decisive action in unclear circumstances. Mining Treatment and Mineral Family

Fire Agate is mined in its primary deposit in association with the igneous rock in which it formed.  Agates are common minerals that not valuable enough to be the primary focus of any large-scale mining operation.  It is however commonly mined in tandem with other precious metals and minerals in small-scale and artisanal mines, especially if the stones are particularly colorful or distinctive.  Agates are also found in alluvial deposits, sometimes completely loose loose and already naturally polished in rivers and on beaches.  Agates are usually ball or almond-shaped nodules ranging in size from a fraction of an inch to several yards in diameter.  If the Agate fills the entire hollow space left by the gas bubble, it is called an Agate Almond.  If a hollow remains in the center, it is called an Agate Geode.

Fire Agate is a silicate mineral.  Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is divided into two main groups, macrocrystalline and microcrystalline.  Macrocrystalline quartz has well-formed crystals that are large enough to be seen by the naked eye, for example, Amethyst or Clear Quartz.  Microcrystalline quartz has crystals so small they can only be seen through a microscope.  These are typically grouped together under the name Chalcedony, or its subcategories Agate and Jasper.  Microcrystalline quartz can be colorless or appear in every shade of the rainbow.

Chakra Healing

Agate stabilizes the aura, eliminating and transforming negative energies. Its cleansing effect is powerful at all levels. Agate stabilizes the aura, eliminating and transforming negative energies. Its cleansing effect is powerful at all levels.

The brown and red shades of Fire Agate stimulate the Base Chakra. The Base, or Root Chakra, is located at the base of the spine, and controls the energy for kinesthetic feeling and movement. It is the foundation of physical and spiritual energy for the body. When physically out of balance the symptoms will manifest themselves as lethargy, low levels of activity, low enthusiasm, and a need for constant stimulation. When its spiritual energies are out of balance, you will feel flighty, disconnected from reality, and distant. When the Base Chakra is in balance, the physical body regains its strength and stamina, and the spiritual energy is rekindled in the form of security and sense of one’s own power. It often leads to independence and spontaneous leadership.

The gold and orange shades of Fire Agate identify with the Sacral Chakra, or Second Chakra, located below the naval and above the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis. It controls the flow of energy and is the center of gravity of the body. It is the center of the Life Force of the body, and controls the flow of information from the body to the mind and from the mind to the body. Gut feelings, intuition, and other “non-linear” communication comes from this chakra. When it is out of balance the symptoms will manifest themselves as confusion, over dependency on others, repression of feelings, inability to feel joy, fear of sensuality or sex, and frustration. When it is in balance you have grace, feel pleasure in life, find you are flexible and can “go with the flow” and do so in good spirit.

The green shades within Fire Agate are associated with the Heart Chakra, located near the center of the breastbone. It regulates our interaction with the external world and controls what we embrace and what we resist. It gives us the balancing ability to be ourselves within the environment. When the heart chakra is out of balance you may feel either controlling or controlled in a relationship, and become critical of the little foibles of others. You may well find yourself having inappropriately strong emotional responses to everyday external stimuli. Green energy resolves blockages and re-balances the heart chakra, helping us understand our own needs and emotions clearly. We can deal with the ebbs and flows of emotional relationships, understand their cyclic nature, and accept the changes.

Using Fire Agate for Best Results

Fire agate is best worn as a necklace, pendant, brooch, or other pieces of visible jewelry. It should be visible to both you and to those around you, as it will send the message that you are a confident individual who knows what they want – which is a message that’s highly appealing in virtually every situation! Wear it over your heart for protection from stress, anxiety, or fear. The heart is the most vulnerable place on our body, so from even a non-mystical perspective, it makes sense to have something protective over it. Since fire agate can be highly beneficial to those who have to balance multiple jobs or commitments, it should be in a form that is easy to take with you on the go.

Even if you have your fire agate in raw form, rather than jewelry, you should be able to take it in your pocket and purse when you are going out, especially if you are going out somewhere where its energy is going to be necessary. It is not particularly beneficial to keep your fire agate in one stationary spot, but if you have quite a large non-portable piece, or simply don’t want to be toting it around with you, then the best places to keep it are in places where you need that fiery, creative energy.

Your office (or home office) is excellent for this, especially if you are planning on using its energy to improve your career path. Another option is to put fire agate near your breakfast table, or in another space where you spend time first thing in the morning.

If you do this, try to take a few moments to focus on its energy while you set intentions for the day.

This will put you on the right path for positive energy throughout your day, and will bring you closer to achieving all your goals.

Similarly, if you frequently experience an “afternoon slump” where you feel tired and demotivated, a piece of fire agate near where you frequently are when this occurs can help you get through this slump without losing all of your productivity for the day, or becoming seriously demotivated or depressed.

Cleansing and Charging

It is important to charge and cleanse your fire agate in the same way you would any other crystal. Cleansing and charging are important for polished gemstones like your Fire Agate.

One of the easiest ways to cleanse your fire agate is to place it on a bed of sea salt for 24 hours. You can also charge your fire agate in the sun or moonlight.

You can run it under lukewarm water for a few minutes, then dry it with a soft cloth.

  • Salt: Salt is known for its ability to remove negative energies. To use it to cleanse your own crystals, fill a jar or bowl with sea salt. Place your stones on top of the salt, then cover the bowl with a cloth. Allow the crystals to sit in the jar for a day or two to cleanse the crystals, then carefully remove them. Use a soft cloth or brush to remove any dust. Dispose of the salt.

  • Sun: While the sun can charge your stones very quickly, you will want to remove the stone from the sun after an hour or two as the sun could discolor your crystals (even those that are sun-safe). You can set your stone outside or on a windowsill to absorb the powerful energy from the heavens. The time you need to charge your crystals will vary, but they can often be ready in just a few minutes.

  • Full Moon: Cleansing your stones with the full moon is an excellent way to remove negativity. At twilight, place your crystals on a windowsill or a place where they will be able to absorb the light of the moon (and its vibrations). Remove the stone the following morning before the sun gets too high into the sky. You can also place several stones on a grid to charge with a specific intention.

  • Running Water: Holding a stone in running water for about a minute each can both cleanse and charge many hard stones. Access to a natural spring is always best, but faucets also work as long as the stone can be completely submerged. You can also place them in a fountain to allow the water to run over the stones. Dry with a soft cloth when you remove the stone from the water.

  • Visualization: Visualization is a safe and powerful way of charging any of your crystals. Take time to center your energy and ground yourself, then pick up the sone in your hands. Focus on filling your hands with a radiant light through visualization for a minute or two. Focus on removing the negativity from the stone, allowing it to be cleansed and recharged with purpose. You should be able to feel the energy within the stone shift into positivity.

  • Sound: If you have large stones or a number of crystals, using sound may allow you to charge all of them at once. You can use Tibetan bells, a singing bowl, or tuning forks to create a vibrational tone that will fill the stone and renew them again. Play the sound for about 10 minutes to charge your crystals.

  • Charging Stones: Placing your crystal on a Selenite wand, inside an Amethyst or Quartz geode, or placing it near other charging crystals (such as Carnelian) can safely charge any stone. While smaller stones could charge in a matter of minutes, it is a good idea to keep them with the charging stones for at least 24 hours. The cleansing stones will remove negative vibrations that your crystal may have absorbed.
