Jasper Stone: Everything you need to know

Jasper is one of those gemstones that everyone should know about. That being said, jasper stones come in a wide variety of colors and intricate patterns, meaning you might even have come across one without even realizing it! Not only is it beautiful to look at, but it can also be a powerful aid in times of stress.

Jasper is a smooth, opaque and impure gemstone. Although it is most commonly associated with the color red, it comes in a variety of colors. A safer bet for how to identify it is to look for a stone with a shiny surface and a speckled pattern underneath. Jasper is almost always multicolored, with a unique and consistent pattern habit. The color palette is usually along the earth color spectrum, with commons colors being red, brown, yellow or green. On the odd occasion, you’ll find a blue jasper stone which is a real treat.

There is a multitude of types. Jasper can be found all over the world on all seven continents. Some forms get their names from their colors: red jasper, green jasper, and yellow jasper.

Others are named for their patterns: picture, zebra, leopard, Picasso.

Types of Jaspers:

Red Jasper

What does red jasper do and what is red jasper good for? The red of the stone responds to the Root chakra, the stabilizing force in the body.

The root is your grounding power. It brings peace of mind, especially when reinforced by red jasper. Bringing tranquility and eliminating anxiety are just two of the benefits of the stone. Bowel or bladder problems, low back pain, and foot pain can indicate an imbalance of the Root chakra.

Spotted like leopard skin, this stone is more connected to the physical realm than the spiritual. Associated with the Root chakra, it gives us the strength and determination of the leopard during times of stress and physical illness.

Zebra Jasper

One of the striped jaspers, black on white, zebra jasper helps to lift us out of lethargy and infuse us with energy. It focuses us on the present, preventing over-thinking, indecisiveness, and depression.
