Sodalite is a beautiful, commonly blue, stone that can help those who struggle with communication, as well as confidence in public speaking. Those who struggle with an overactive mind may also experience the benefits of Sodalite as it can help organize one’s mind. Sodalite connects to and stimulates the Throat Chakra, allowing for truth and strong communication.

History

The name of the stone “Sodalite” is reflective of its high sodium content. Sodalite was first documented and analyzed in Greenland in 1806 by Scottish mineralogist and chemist Thomas Thomson. Sodalite gained popularity in the 1900’s when Princess Margaret of England was gifted a beautiful piece of Bancroft Sodalite and fell in love with the stone. She made immediate arrangements to quarry enough Sodalite to use as interior decoration for her London residence, the “Marlborough House”. The three largest deposits of Sodalite reside in Canada in Bancroft, Dungannon Township, and Hastings County, Ontario.

Composition and Formation

Sodalite is a bit unique in the way that it is not a “surface stone”. Sodalite is actually brought to the surface from the deepest levels of the earth through volcanic activity. Sodalite is commonly found as masses within igneous rocks, and contain high amounts of sodium. The magma that Sodalite forms in contain incredibly small amounts of silicon and aluminum. Sodalite has a vitreous luster and has a Mohs Hardness of 5.5 to 6. High-quality Sodalite is commonly used as a gemstone, sculptural material, and architectural stone.

Cleansing and Charging

Sodalite, like most crystals, should be cleansed and charged regularly, especially if one is wearing or having frequent physical contact with the stone. Cleansing crystals in water is a popular technique, however it would be best to avoid soaking your Sodalite in water as it could risk the physical integrity of the crystal.

However, there are many safe ways to cleanse and charge your Sodalite!

Including:

  • Place the stone in direct sunlight or moonlight

  • Pair Sodalite with a cleansing and charging stone such as Clear Quartz or Selenite

  • Smudge the crystal with smoke produced from burning sage or incense

  • Cleanse and charge the crystal through the sound and vibrations of a bell or singing bowl
